Along with the course text book, the class is enriched with selections from primary sources such as literary works, maps, art, music, documentaries, and film. Research, writing, and presentations develop the students' understanding of the major concepts of American history. This course satisfies the Buckley School's U.S. History requirement.
Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
MATHEMATICS
Geometry Honors
This course is designed for students who are capable of accelerating their progress in mathematics. Classic Euclidian geometry is studied, as well as introductory logic, coordinate geometry, transformational geometry, and trigonometry. Students may enroll only upon completion of Algebra I Honors and with the approval of the math department. Students taking this course will need to have a TI-Nspire CXCAS calculator. This course satisfies the Buckley School's Geometry requirement.
Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Pre-Calculus Honors
This course is designed for students who are capable of accelerating their progress in mathematics. The course concentrates on the concepts from algebra and trigonometry, covering complex numbers, polynomial and rational functions, logarithms, conic sections, and polar equations. Students may enroll only with the approval of the math department. Students taking this course will need to have a TI-Nspire CXCAS calculator. This course satisfies the Buckley School's requirement of one year of mathematics beyond Algebra II.
Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
SCIENCE
Biology (Grade 9 requirement)
This course focuses on human biology with students learning about the skeletal, muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, and immune systems. Students also study molecular biology topics such as protein synthesis, biotechnology, and genetics. Freshmen science emphasizes scientific reading, writing, and reasoning skills. This course satisfies the Buckley School's Biology requirement. Enrollment priority will be given to rising 9th graders.
Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Chemistry (Grade 10 requirement)
This course presents an overview of the structure of atomic theory, periodicity, bonding, chemical equations, stoichiometry, and acid-base chemistry. This course is not intended as a preparatory course for Advanced Placement Chemistry, nor does it prepare the student to take the SAT II Subject Test in Chemistry. However, it does fulfill the chemistry prerequisite for A.P. Environmental Science, as well as the Buckley School’s Chemistry requirement. Enrollment priority will be given to rising 10th graders.
Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Physics (Grade 11 requirement)
In this course, the rules that govern the physical world are explained through the use of practical examples, analogies, hands-on experiences, and mathematical principles. Topics covered include motion, gravitation, momentum, energy, electricity and magnetism, and sound and light. This course is not intended as a preparatory course for A.P. Physics C: Mechanics. However, this course satisfies the Buckley School's Physics requirement. Enrollment priority will be given to rising 11th graders.
