FIRST Robotics Team

FIRST Robotics is robotics and more! Yes, you can learn how to engineer, build, and program a 120-pound, competitive robot, but it’s not just about the robot! If you want to develop your leadership and entrepreneurial skills, or to receive a challenge that requires critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation to solve, or to be presented with an opportunity to share your artistic skills with others, then FIRST Robotics is also for you

Team 1661 is looking for students to fill the following roles: project manager, shop manager, mechanical lead, electrical lead, pneumatics, programming with LabVIEW, CAD modeling with Inventor, scheduler, safety lead, building the playing field, rules expert, fundraising, public relations, web design, graphic arts, and photography. Experienced team members will mentor new members – no prior experience necessary!

The FIRST Robotics design/build season begins early in January and lasts for six weeks. The competitions are in March and April. We meet in Room 118 on Fridays at 1:30 p.m., all day on Saturdays and Monday holidays, and on an occasional Sunday. Our first meeting is on Friday, January 6, 2012. The new game will be announced Saturday morning, January 7, and we will meet that afternoon at Buckley to brainstorm designs.

We will be competing in the San Diego Regional on Friday March 2, 2012 through Sunday March 4, 2012 and the Las Vegas Regional Competition on Thursday April 5, 2012 through Saturday April 7, 2012. Students must make their own travel arrangements and each student must be accompanied by an adult - no chaperones will be provided. We encourage students to participate in the program as much as possible, but attendance at all meetings and the regional competitions is not mandatory.

The cost of joining the team is $395. Robotics is open to students in grades 9 through 12; enrollment is limited.
