On May 4, Jordan Moseley hosted “Girls to Gems,” that provided 120 high school girls from South LA with the goods and know-how to do prom in style. Event attendees received prom dresses, shoes, accessories, hair and make-up consultations, and even some after-prom dresses.
For seventh grade Honors English classes, the fight for control of the Roman Empire between Mark Antony and Marcus Brutus took a decidedly modern turn. After reading Julius Caesar, the students were divided into two groups, each of which devised a campaign for the best leader of Rome. All campaigns included a website and web ad, in addition to public speeches staged in the classroom and the steps of the Disney Pavilion in front of a packed lunchtime crowd.
This year a recycling program, started eight years ago by the third grade, was revamped. Now, all money earned from the recyclables collected and redeemed goes to sponsor, through a charitable organization, Silas Ntasin, a young boy from Ghana.
Teacher Appreciation Awards for 2012 have been announced! The Middle School National Junior Honor Society honored 6th Grade Teacher Christy Durham, the Upper School National Honor Society chose Science Department Chair Kathy Griffis, and Director of College Counseling Ann Rike was honored by the administration, NHS, and NJHS.
Over Spring Break, the Griffitrons competed in the Las Vegas Regional Robotics Competition where they wowed judges, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, earning the coveted Engineering Excellence Award sponsored by Delphi. The team finished in second place in the qualifying rounds and made it all the way to the semifinals of the elimination rounds. Its robot was the only one to successfully balance with two other robots on an alliance bridge during the quarterfinals, demonstrating the ease in which a successful triple-balance can be accomplished.
The final tally from this year’s food drive to help the Valley Food Bank is in and the numbers are truly astounding! The Buckley Community more than doubled the amount of food that’s been collected in any previous year. In total, over four tons of food was donated. “One of the Valley Food Bank staff members who picked up the food said the supply of rice we donated would last them until Thanksgiving next year,” said Chris Braunschweiger, community service director.
Griffin musicians have had several reasons to sing over the past few months. Senior brothers Mark and Michael Cook are representing Buckley at the California All-State Honor Choirs event this Thursday-Saturday. That’s on the heels of Greg Sliskovich ’12 making Buckley history when he took first place in the finals of the Southern California Vocal Association Vocal Solo Competition on March 11.
It’s not every day that a letter from the White House, signed by the President, arrives in the mail—so when the third graders in Mr. Park’s class received a response to the letter they had written to President Obama, they were thrilled.
Nine Buckley faculty members were invited to speak at the CAIS Southern Regional Meeting on March 5. They presented case studies on some of the areas where Buckley has taken a leadership role in curriculum and program development. The sessions were:
The results are in for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards/Southern California region and Buckley Middle and Upper School students took home an astounding 22 awards. Two students, Lauren Halperin '12 and Michael Sliskovich '14, received gold awards and qualified for national judging later this year. Three students earned senior portfolio awards for portfolios of eight pieces of work.
