Chess Club

Chess is an exciting educational experience. This class not only teaches students to play chess, but also helps them succeed in school by stimulating problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills. Each class has a lesson for beginners, a lesson for intermediate/advanced students, and playing time for everybody. Participants have the opportunity to win cool prizes...certificates, medals and trophies.

Classical Ballet
T 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm - kindergarten, first grade and second grade
This class is designed to provide a creative introduction to the world of ballet by exploring various ballet stories and incorporating dance adaptations of those stories. Age appropriate basics of classical ballet, proper alignment and self-expression are fostered. Steps are taught using their French names. All students work together on the Vaganova syllabus of the Russian School of Dance. Dancers, in this session, learn variations of the Fan Dance, bullfights and windmills as they work on the Don Quixote ballet adventure. The grand finale for family and friends is an end-of-session performance. The attire for boys: a white tee shirt, black shorts, jazz pants or sweat pants. The attire for girls: a pink or black leotard, pink tights, and pink leather ballet slippers.

Computer Club with Mrs. Borggrebe
T 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm - kindergarten, first grade through fifth grade
Spend an afternoon exploring educational software using iPads and desktop computers. Students become familiar with the many exciting ways to use technology in this class. Project-based learning, writing and illustrating a book or creating a photo album, is part of the experience. Tailoring activities to meet individual needs and teaching correct touch-typing techniques are important components of this class.

Cooking Italiano for Kids
T 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm - kindergarten, first grade through fifth grade
Ciao! Young chefs learn to cook classic Italian dishes with Chef Eric while exploring various Italian cities. In this class students study the healthy Mediterranean diet, try new foods, make pasta from scratch and even learn to speak some Italian. The dishes students prepare include: Ravioli with Spinach and Ricotta, Gnocchi with Marinara Sauce, Chicken Caesar Salad, Salmon with Tomatoes and Capers...and don't forget "la dolce" such as Cannolis with Sweet Ricotta and Chocolate Chips, and Vanilla-Fruit Gelato. Culinary Kidz Academy

Laughter and learning are the two main ingredients of Culinary Kidz Academy. This revolutionary program, created by elementary school educator, Danny Corsun, provides a FUN culinary workshop for students. Lessons integrate academic components such as math, science, history, safety, hygiene and nutrition. Students are empowered to cook REAL food, learn valuable facts, and build self-esteem all while having a blast. Games, Games, Games

Come join Coach Holland for an afternoon of FUN! The emphasis of Games, Games, Games is on skill development, teamwork and sportsmanship. Skills are developed through drill and activities designed to build a solid foundation for each of the participants. Hoopamania, Run to Freedom, Cone Ball, and Spoon and Egg Relay are just a few of the games students experience in this class. Skill levels are carefully matched with each activity to help all children feel successful.

Getting Down in Lower Town
Th 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm - first grade through fifth grade
Beginning and experienced dancers are invited to explore multiple styles of movement including jazz, ballet, hip hop, cheerleading and broadway. To the beat of various music genres, students have the opportunity to develop technique, learn routines, and even choreograph their own pieces of work. This program focuses on the value and joy of becoming a diverse performer. Dancers build coordination and artistry, while expressing themselves through creative movement. There will be an end-of-session performance for family and friends.

Hockeytime

This class is designed for the true hockey enthusiast. Stick handling, shooting, passing and goaltending are covered along with aspects of team playing. Come spend the afternoon on the primary playground ready to engage in high powered and fun hocky activities.

Mr. Shaffer's School of Rock!

Join this class and learn how to express yourself and gain confidence in an artistic manner with kindergarten teacher, Mr. Shaffer. Each week learn about a specific rock band (AC/DC, The Ramones, RUSH, KISS…) be part of your own rock band, and create your own personal rock star look and attitude. Entertain on a stage at the Buckley Fair and a special Buckley event.

Okinawan Karate

Children develop self-discipline, respect for others, and self-confidence, all while involved in the highest level of fun and fitness in the Okinawan Karate program! The focus of this program is health, mind and body development through the safe teaching and practice of Okinawan Karate. Upper school science instructor, Dr. Smith, has excelled in Karate for over 25 years, with 12 years of teaching both children and adults the discipline of Karate. Please note: There is a one time uniform fee of approximately $60.00.

Pop, Lock and Hip Hop
W 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm - second grade through fifth grade
This high-energy dance class is certain to get girls and boys moving and grooving in the fundamentals of hip-hop dance. The class focuses on rhythm, coordination, and musicality, while fostering creativity, individuality, and fun. Students enrolled in the class have two performance opportunities to be announced at a later time. The class is instructed by Lower/Middle/Upper School dance instructor, Ralinda Watts, and Shai Rosen, a former student of Mrs. Watts. Shai is a featured dancer on Disney channel's Shake it Up, Camp Rock, and episodes of the Fresh Beat Band. He is currently a dance major at UCLA, and will be a dynamic and inspiring role model for budding Buckley dancers. There will be an optional end-of-session performance for family and friends.

Robot Edutainment Level 1
M 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm - third grade through fifth grade
A Robot Edutainment class teaches students not only core science principles, but also robotics. Students create robots that can move objects, find their own way around obstacles, play soccer, respond to light or motion, or navigate through a maze. Structured lessons and challenges will assist students in intermediate levels of construction, proper use of blocks, motors, IR sensors, remote control, and programming topics (GUI). Eventually, students will be ready to operate and program using a control console and computer to maneuver their robots to move and react in order to solve challenges. This program allows students to build 10 - 12 guided robotics projects culminating in a final independent project for presentation. Robot Edutainment makes thinking fun!

Robot Edutainment Level 2
Th 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm - thrid grade through fifth grade
Students may enroll in this class only if they have taken the Level 1 Robut Edutainment course in the first session. Continuing students begin to learn how to program their robots on a compiler. Then they download directly onto the main board. This session promises to enhance the concepts and skills previously acquired.

Tennis with Coach Cole
M 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm - third grade through fifth grade
This program introduces and reinforces the FUNdamental tennis skills of court agility and footwork, ground strokes, volley, serves, and lobs. Consistent with "play-based" coaching, sessions are structured so that children learn skills and can apply them during simulated game situations. All games and activities accommodate various skill levels, and age appropriate technical and tactical concepts are integrated.

Yoga with Miss Cosolito
M 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm - kindergarten, first grade through fifth grade
Through the practice of yoga, children improve motor skills, coordination, balance, strength and flexibility. Yoga helps children gain a deeper awareness of their feelings through meditation and breathing. The integration of a physical and mental yoga practice helps students increase their self-esteem, and develop an understanding of their bodies and minds. Come have fun with your friends as you stretch your hearts, minds and bodies in this class. Please note: Students need to provide their own yoga mat.
