Building a Better Future for Buckley Students
A Unique Campus for a Unique Educational Program
Founded in 1933 by Dr. Isabelle Buckley, The Buckley School is the oldest co-educational day school in Los Angeles. Our beautiful 18-acre campus, nestled in a wooded canyon, provides a safe, serene home to 750 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. In this close-knit educational community students pursue a challenging program designed to instill the essential qualities of the well-rounded individual.
Our Stansbury Avenue campus was built nearly 40 years ago, and has undergone no major renovation since. The changes in education that have occurred in those four decades require that we modernize the school’s aging and overtaxed facilities to meet our students’ current needs and to plan for the years to come.
We also recognize that the school has a responsibility to our neighbors to conduct our operations in a way that minimizes impact, and, if possible, enhances the community.
To address that need, Buckley developed an initial Campus Enhancement Plan (Plan) that was presented to Buckley families and the community in November, 2004.
As the Plan moved forward, Buckley was involved in another important project: a seven month search for a new Head of School. That search process presented an opportunity to step back and take another look at the Plan. The implementation of an architectural peer review process generated fresh perspectives and innovative new ideas on how to help Buckley optimize its overall program objectives.
To answer these needs, we created a Revised Campus Enhancement Plan that was presented to Buckley families and the community in February 2006.
The revised plan now fully addresses Buckley's prioritized program needs, including:
- Additional classrooms for the Middle and Upper School
- Expanded and updated performing arts classrooms
- State-of-the-art Middle and Upper School science classrooms
- Dedicated and enhanced indoor athletic space
- Additional outdoor athletic space
- Updated and improved visual arts classrooms
- Improvements to the Lower School
- State-of-the-art library and technology facilities
- Improved on-site parking and traffic management
- Improved Conditional Use Permit (CUP)
- Additional students for Middle and Upper School
The revised plan establishes a thoughtful and efficient academic community primarily within the center of Buckley's beautiful 18-acre campus. Utilizing naturalistic materials that reflect the campus' tranquil canyon setting, the design is respectful of the past, yet appropriate for a 21st century academic institution of the highest caliber.
